Like the Toyota Avensis saloon, the Avensis Tourer is offered with a 1.8-litre petrol and three diesel engine options, including the 2.0-litre, 2.2-litre D-4D and top of the range 2.2-litre D-CAT. There are three different gearboxes on offer, including a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic and seven-speed stepped Multidrive S CVT, which is combined with the 1.8-litre petrol engine. Toyota's Optimal Drive engine technology ensures good performance and excellent fuel economy, as well as low emissions for the environmentally-conscious buyer.

The Toyota Avensis Tourer estate rides and handles superbly for a car of its size, with improvements to the suspension and power steering delivering better ride comfort and handling. On the road, the2.2-litre D-CAT offers the strongest performance with 148bhp and a0-62mph sprint time of 9.2 seconds.

COMFORT
On the road, the inside of the Toyota Avensis Tourer estate is quiet and comfortable, with excellent sound insulation creating a peaceful environment free of unwanted engine and road noise. Four trim levels – Active, Icon, Icon Business Edition and Excel – are all well-equipped, with the latest Toyota Touch 2 with Go multimedia and navigation systems included as standard on Icon Business Edition models (Touch & Go on Icon, Touch 2 with Go Plus on Excel).

Every Toyota Avensis Tourer is roomy inside with plenty of head- and legroom and uses high-quality materials that look and feel great. An optional protection pack adds a boot liner and also rear parking sensors to Active and Icon models. Excel models also receive a panoramic roof as standard.

PRACTICALITY
The Toyota Avensis Tourer is a large estate car ideal for family and business use. The rear tailgate provides access to 543 litres of boot space, increasing to 1609 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. SAFETY
Both the Toyota Avensis Tourer estate and the Toyota Avensis saloon were awarded themaximum five-star rating in the 2009 Euro NCAP safety crash tests, so you can be assured that its strong body, numerous airbags and retractable load guard (Excel models only) will protect occupants in the event of an accident.

To help avoid that happening, the Toyota Avensis Tourer is fitted with safety aids like anti-lock brakes, steering assist, stability control, traction control and brake assist. As an option on 2.2 D-CAT Excel models, a Safety Pack includes adaptive cruise control, lane monitoring systems and a pre-crash safety system that uses radar and cameras to monitor the road for potential collisions and activate avoidance systems.

All Toyota Avensis models have follow-me-home headlights that stay illuminated for 30 seconds to light your path home, keeping you safe even after you have left the vehicle.

RUNNING COSTS*
Running costs for the Toyota Avensis Tourer are kept to a minimum thanks to its sleek, aerodynamic design and efficient petrol and diesel engines. The low-emission engines mean that road tax rates start from £0 per year for the most popular 2.0 D4-D diesel, and at most will cost £290 each year (2.2 D-CAT 150 diesel). Impressive fuel economy ranges from 42.2mpg (1.8 Valvematic petrol) to 62.8mpg (2.0 D4-D diesel) on the combined cycle, and as it only needs a service every 10,000 miles or once a year, the Toyota Avensis Tourer is affordable to maintain.
