Very happy with my bike for now, but of course searching around for a great next motorcycle. I love flickability, so weight is a concern, I would love to have shaft drive for ease of maintenance, and lots of power, wind beater fairings, and excellent suspension and composure.

Well, I may have found it:

Anyone ridden this bike? I really don't want a beefy bike, it has to feel nimble.

It's a good one...

This seems to cover it. BMW K1300S (2009-current) - BMW Motorcycle Reviews

The biggest knock on the bike is its price compared to the new and used competition.

560lb wet means you're going to know it's a SPORT-tourer, but with all of the gadgetry and comfort, so what?

The Triumph Sprint ST/GT are supposed to be pretty nimble. Only issue is they have chain drive. Might want to look into them.

It isn't very flickable(tires are in decent shape) and it vibrates from 5k all the way till redline, but 5k in 6th is around 90mph(indicated, probably 86 actual) so it isn't really too big of a deal. A lot of people who've owned both complain that the 13 vibrates more, unfortunately. Personally, I'd be willing to take slightly less power and less vibrations, as the 1200 is pretty god damn fast.

Honestly, rereading your OP, there isn't a point in describing the bike further, the bike is most certainly beefy and not super flickable; an ST3S or Sprint ST would probably be more to your liking.

Maybe I am just going overboard with my chain maintenance, I clean and re-wax every ~500 miles, it's a real pain in the ass.

Well, if I must stick with a chain to keep down the weight, and weight is the key to flickability, then I will prolly just go with a 600SS as my next bike - I guess that's my destiny - I really want to experience a razor sharp bike, guess the big ST bike will be later in my journey, and cleaning chains will continue for awhile.

Thanks for the input.

I lube my chain every 500 which takes about 10 seconds, but i probably only clean it every 2k miles. I'm sure your way makes the chain last a little longer but meh.

The 1300s is a really nice bike but in the tighter twisty stuff isn't super capable, and starts to run out of ground clearance on the drive shaft side. That being said i spent a little bit of time following a guy on a group ride with either an st2 or 3 (no idea really) and the way the exhaust is designed there is no freaking ground clearance. Other then that they look like fantastic bikes.

Vibrates from 5k to red line? Jesus H. BMW hasn't heard of a counter balanced engine? With all of those default farkles I thought that would be standard...it is for the Blackbird and even my bike that isn't like a turbine smooth ride only vibrates at 4500-5000 or so.

As for chain maintenance I never minded on the last bike, don't mind on this and can't see continuing to mind. Getting a Simple Solutions Grunge Brush - Dirt Bike Motocross - Motorcycle Superstore helps. Shafts have their own problems. Weight, power loss and jacking etc. :shrug

Good luck whichever you choose, but I'd demo whatever you do want to make your 2nd ride just to be damn sure that's what you want. (Not that they really do demos for Japanese bikes. Not where I'm from, anyway.) If you want an easier time touring with a beefier engine I figured people'd be pushing you towards a standard liter bike. (Ninja 1000, fz1, sv1000, bandit 1250 etc etc.) Lighter, more torque than you have, luggage comes with many or doesn't look out of place for them, almost flickable, even if they are all chain.

Hayabusa for real? Some of those Busa owners have a serious identity complex. Its a drag bike, its a sport bike, its a show bike, its a touring bike..extend the swing arm...add fur...lower it...chrome it..what ever happened to hyper-bike?

The BMW K1300 was built for ST and it remains just that. If I had a choice between Busa/K1300 i'd be rock stupid to pick the Busa.

Busa>K1300, cheaper to buy, cheaper to own, more power.

That's why the Busa is so popular. It can be all of those things with just a few, small modifications.

I'm really considering a k1200s as my next bike. I won't pay the price that the 1300 is going for. Moving from the foothills of NC to the flatlands of OH next year, so i'm gonna need something more comfortable than a sport bike.

Concourse 14 is a competent sport tourer. Rode one a couple of weeks ago, smooth and fast without the engine ever letting you know its trying.

I will have to admit though I love the K1300S, test drove one, yeah, love.

Go for it. Go for an 07+ unless you know the bike has an immaculate service history, though. The 05-06 models had some problems.

Doesn't Kawasaki make a nice sport touring bike that's reliable and cheap?

Cheap? Maybe the ZZR models with some mods would be cheap but I think their designated ST model is the Concourse. It has very good speed but it is heavy and not as agile as some models.... so I am told. I guess their ZX14 could probably fill that role too.

One of the linked articles said that Busa > ZX14 in nearly every way except for a more upright seating position and breaks. That article also said that K1300 > Busa. Therefor K1300 > ZX14, I guess. :shrug

Japanese hyper bikes don't have nearly the amount of gadgets that the German bike does, though. That's a shame. (But it does keep the price down, I guess.)

Oh yeah, the ZX-14 is a great sport tourer. I see 2006-2007 models with low miles for around $6K in my area. Brand new ones go for around $10K. Much cheaper than the Hayabusa and BMW.
